HIV PrEP and Prevention Study in the Deep South
We’re making a difference by Amplifying Our Voices.
HIV disproportionately affects gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in the Deep South compared to other regions of the United States. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective strategy to reduce the risk of contracting HIV, but a variety of barriers (ranging from stigma to systemic racism) prevent gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men from accessing and utilizing PrEP. Led by researchers from UAB, our study will use interviews and surveys to determine a foundation for more effective HIV prevention messages that are affirming and uplifting for Southern communities. This study is housed at UAB but intentionally engages with community members to understand how we can better promote PrEP. With this strategy, we hope to increase PrEP uptake as a proactive sexual health treatment.
How Are We Making A Difference in HIV Prevention?
The National Institute of Health (NIH) has made it a priority to reduce HIV transmission through a variety of methods, including an increase in PrEP uptake. Novel strategies, such as empowering language in PrEP promotional strategies, can help increase PrEP uptake and reduce the transmission of HIV. Amplifying Our Voice is a study focused on understanding and creating effective messaging to promote pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as a preventative treatment for reducing HIV transmission. Through our research, we hope to eliminate systemic cultural barriers, empower gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men with authentic messaging, and increase PrEP uptake in Southern communities to reduce the transmission of HIV.
